Proposals & Grant Writing

The Camel Diagram

For several years, I developed technical sales proposals for AT&T. Early on, I was able to apply my publisher experience to help improve the proposal process, bringing greater efficiency and lowering development costs. During my time at AT&T I developed several versions of proposal process manuals and training.

One objective of our processes and training was to move away from reactionary proposal responses. We needed to eliminate the fire drills that had a negative impact on resources and quality.

The diagram below was lovingly referred to as the "camel diagram" because of the "humps." The solid black line represents how the process was supposed to work, and the dotted red line is what happened all too often. To see a larger version of the diagram, click on the image below.

Over time, we successfully moved toward a more stable and rational proposal development process.

I can also share a chapter from a proposal process manual for which I was the primary writer, and did the layout and design. This was one of many iterations of the manual, each one involving more people and becoming more detailed. The manual was critical for helping standardize the proposal development process and eliminate "recreating the wheel" all over again. Click here to read the chapter.

The point is, I know how to manage the proposal process and create compliant, quality proposals. Oh, and the same skills can be applied to grant writing.

The key to creating a successful proposal is to respond to the RFP exactly as instructed, using the RFP as your outline.

clever >> Exhibiting mental adroitness or astuteness; practical ingenuity, understanding, skill; original, bright, nimble, shrewd, inventive, playful, amusing, witty.

smith >> One who makes or works at something specific. Often used in combination: A wordsmith (a fluent and prolific writer, especially one who writes professionally; an expert with words.)

CleverTip: An Executive Summary is a condensed version of the proposal with a sales or marketing focus. It captures the essence of the proposal and sets the theme for what is to follow.

Thoughtful. Creative. Engaging. Clever!
